What protects a cultural project as it grows?
For Mousaios Sound, it begins with protecting the name under which its work is becoming known.
Milcev Burbea has had the great pleasure of assisting with the registration of the MOUSAIOS trademark, securing the identity of a project dedicated to discovering, documenting, and carrying forward the traditional music of Buzău County.
Founded in 2022 by artist and researcher Claudia Colniceanu, with the support of the National University of Music Bucharest, Mousaios Sound goes directly to the communities where this musical heritage still lives. Its work is built through field research, conversations with local people, recordings, workshops, conferences, and a growing archive of the region’s musical memory.
Its connection to Buzău is present even in its name: Mousaios is one of the ancient names of the Buzău River.
Traditional music itself is not protected by registering a trademark. What can be protected is the distinctive identity through which a project presents its work, builds public recognition, and earns a reputation.
That distinction matters. As cultural initiatives grow, their names become more than labels. They allow audiences to recognise the source of the work and help preserve the integrity of the project built around it.
